Michael Szabath Profile
I Started off as a surveyor on the railways and was sent out to Wellington, Dubbo, Parkes and Broken Hill back in the early 70's, where my love of the Australian bush developed. Didn't have a decent camera in those days, just used a Kodak point and shoot instamatic. Bought a Pentax MX then changed to a Nikkormat which served me fine as my photographic skills and passion evolved, later upgrading to Nikon F4s and now finally having gone digital with their high end D2x and shoot in the Raw mode then process the images using Phase one software.
To me the digital age has reinvented Photography.
I approached a BMX magazine with some photographs of two visiting American riders which to my surprise were snapped up by the editor and was offered a job as a weekend stringer. WOW! I was on my way. From here I progressed to car magazines. Worked for all the major titles then as well as weekend weddings and product shots.
An opportunity presented itself so I resigned from my job to concentrate on my Photography which I have now been doing professionally for 25 years, 15 of which as a press photographer.
My work has appeared in many books and magazines on Photography, Aeroplanes, Sport, Travel and Automobiles.
It wasn't until I took 3 months off work in 2005 and travelled up through Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria in an old campervan that my true passion for the ever changing Landscape emerged. Travelling alone was very satisfying, inspirational and peaceful as well. I try to capture the facinating moods and colours of nature in my photographs . You do wait around for the light to be right but when it happens you have to work quickly because Mother Nature puts on an incredible show which is usually very wild but is all over before you know it. The best times that are really spectacular to work in are around sunrise and sunset. It is a time of magic and great specticle.
I feel that God has given me a certain talent for visualizing photographs and am privileged to be able to capture the beauty of his creation that surrounds us and present it to other people .
I have recently started to produce greeting cards, postcards, motivational posters, newsletters, jigsaw puzzles and print some of my Landscape photographs onto canvas as limited edition works as well as reverting back to black and white for my flower and Portraiture work. I use canvas beacause it gives the image a different dimension. It makes them look like paintings.
